Last week i wrote a blog post about a tawny owl in our garden. I took it to Korkeasaari zoo where there is an animal shelter for wild animals. The owl has been there ever since to recover from its stressful experience. I phoned there last Friday to ask how it was doing, and they told that it hadn't used it's legs or wings at all, but it had a healthy apetite: it had eaten two mice a day! For it's eventual muscle aches and pains it had received pain killers that it had taken with fierceful hissing and claw show, so they thought that it would make a full recovery.

I asked if it would be brought back home once it was recovered. They told me that I could pick it up myself if I wanted, otherwise it would be released on the outskirts of eastern Helsinki. As I didn't want it to end up being a city owl I naturally told them that I'd be happy to pick it up an release it here where it was born. I read somewhere that tawny owl is committed to it's home area, but young individuals like this may travel up to 100-150 km from their birth place - as far away from Mom and Dad as possible... Hymy

This morning I got a call from the zoo and I was told that the owl had been transferred into a bigger cage, where is was sitting on the highest branch all day long - being a night animal that's what they do. It has been eating a remarkable number of mice sofar. I told them how we still wonder it's getting caught in the bird net, since it was tightened around our strawberry bushes with poles in each corner. They assumed that being a young individual just having been weaned from it's parents it might have been suffering from malnutrition and therefore being in a bad condition already. Therefore it wouldn't have had the enrgy to try and release itself from the net.

They suggested that they still keep an eye on it for a couple of days, but we could pick it up during the weekend. They recommended that the best time would be in the evening, so it wouldn't be so long after the pick-up, release and night fall. When releasing it we have to take it into the woods, and if we have courage to handle it we just take it from the box and throw it in the air. Or then we can shake it out of the box onto a tree stump, and let it find it's way from there.

Our Firstborn told that there are certain pet shops that you can buy frozen mice from... I wonder if they give from the zoo a supper picnic bag of a couple of mice to go with it...
