I've been participating the "some UFO finished every month" challenge, and this month I'm exceptionally early with this UFO. I'm not as early with the originally planned schedule, since this a quilt that I wanted to give to a friend as a birthday present over a year ago. For some reason or other I just haven't been able to bring myself to finish it.Yesterday morning I decided that it would have to be now a never, and grabbed my textile paints to finalize the painting first. I had done it in March, but the yellow parts weren't painted yet. Slowly and gradually I got more and more engaged with the quilt and just a while ago = 7.55 pm I had the hanging sleeve fastened to the back!

Kuten kuvastakin näkyy, mielessä on kaksi asiaa, jotka askarruttavat sekä omaa että oppilaiden mieltä. Värien valinta nousee esiin ensimmäisestä työstä lähtien, ja mitä pidemmälle tekniset taidot karttuvat, sitä enemmän mielelle jää aikaa askarrella värien kanssa. Värisilmän osalta on totta, että joillakin se on alun alkaen parempi kuin toisilla. Joillakin värin valinta onnistuu ihan luontaisesti ilman, että tarvitsee ajatella väriympyrää, eri värien sijaintia ympyrässä, vastavärien käyttöä tehokeinona jne. Toiset ponnistelevat ja pettyvät: lopputulos ei vastaakaan odotuksia - mutta tässäkin harjoitus auttaa. Väriympyrä ei ole mikään kauhistuksen aihe, vaan hyvä työkalu oman silmän avuksi. Sen avulla perussäännöt on helppo muistaa - kunnes ne tarttuvat selkäytimeen.
Harjoittelun merkitys pätee tikkaukseenkin, joka alkaa askarruttaa mieltä ehkä hiukan myöhemmässä vaiheessa kuin värivalinnat. Netti, kirjat ja lehdet ovat pullollaan upeasti tikattuja töitä. Ne haastavat kokeilemaan, mutta pettymys on suuri, kun kaikki ei ensimmäisillä kerroilla sujukaan kuin Strömsössä. Tässä kohtaa näyttää usein käyvän niin, että unohtuu se pitkäaikainen työ, joka on pitänyt tehdä, että ylipäänsä ompelussa saavuttaa "varman" tason, ja asiat sujuvat rutiinilla. Tikkaaminen, käsin tai koneella, vapaasti tai yläsyöttäjän kanssa, on sekin tekniikkalaji, joka vaatii paljon harjoitusta. Tunteja, kymmeniä tai satoja tunteja, jotta ollaan huipulla. Mutta se ei toki tarkoita, etteikö jo kiipeämismatkan varrelta avautuisi huikeita näköaloja. Jo lyhyenkin kiipeämisen jälkeen puiden latvojen seasta voi jo nähdä aavistuksen siitä, mitä kaikkea huipulla aikanaan eteen aukeaa. Tikkauksen osalta tämän voi kokea tekemällä itselleen pieniä (esim. 25 x 25 cm) harjoitusvoileipiä, ja tikkaamalla yhden sellaisen päivässä kahden viikon ajan. Jos on sitä tyyppiä, ettei halua nurkkiin harjoitustilkkuja, kaikenlaisia pieniä töitä voi käyttää myös harjoituksiin: patalappuja, tabletteja, meikkipusseja. Kun sitten tarkastelee ensimmäistä ja neljättätoista harjoitusta, niin varmasti näkee oman kehittymisensä, mikä varmasti kannustaa jatkamaan kohti huippua.
Se siitä - oliko vähän paatoksellista?
Vielä tilasin yhden jutun, vaikka edellinenkään ei ole hyllystä liikahtanut kuluneen vuoden aikana: ohjeet applikaatiotyöhön.
Mallin voi toteuttaa joko käsin tai koneella ommellen, itse toistaiseksi ajattelen, että kone on ainoa vaihtoehto. Mutta koskaanhan ei voi tietää, milloin oma mieli muuttuu: jospa jokin kaunis päivä herään huomaamaan, että käsin applikointiakin voisi tehdä enemmän kuin se yhden kokeilun tilkkumatkani alkutaipaleella...

It took even longer than last time to receive the quilt books from C&T Publishing spring sale. But they actually arrived quite conveniently last Wednesday as I came home from the last quilt workshop session. They are now on my bedside table so every evening I can take a small portion. I doubt they'll help me to fall asleep...
As you can see two themes are puzzling in my - and students' - minds - among the other hundred things: color choice and quilting. Color choice is the one that keeps you busy from the very first quilt you're making. Without doubt there area people that are somewhat naturally talented with this, unconsciously they use the color theory, complementary colors etc. and pick the most adorable color combinations. Others struggle and get disappointed - the end result is far from what was planned. Eventhough we are different in this sense, practice doesn't harm anyone. Color wheel is not to be afraid of, it is a good aid for your eye, and it isn't that complicated, there are a couple of basic rules that are not hard to memorize - until they become your second nature.
With quilting I think the importance of practice applies as well. You'll probably start to wonder about quilting a bit later than the color problematics. Web, books and magazines are full of quilts with the most beautiful and intricate quilting on them. You get challenged to try it yourself. Mostly the disappointment is great, as you notice that it isn't a child's play like you had imagined. Funny enough you seem to forget the long journey of sewing you've had before it has become routine to you with the basic sewing. Quilting, be it by hand or by machine, by free-motion or walking foot, is all about technique. It requires practice, hours of practice, hundreds of hours. But on the other hand it's not as gloomy as it sounds: it doesn't mean that your climbing trip to the top of the mountain has to be finished before you get to see the wonderful view. Even when climbing, you can get a glimpse of what is to come. In practice: do a little exercise on a practice sandwich once a day for two weeks. Then compare your first exercise with the fourteenth one and you are surely going to see the cevelopment during that short track. And it will encourage you to climb further.
Besides the actual books I did order one applique pattern - eventhough the one from last time still sits tightly on my bookself. The pattern is either for machine or hand applique, and at the moment machine is the only option for me. But who knows: maybe some day I'll wake up feeling that I have to try give hand applique another go - after the one from years ago at the early hours of my quilting trip...

Yesterday was the last evening for the summer quilting workshop. Some spare bags were still sewn and we had a short look at the rag fleece quilt. I had asked the students to bring all things big and small that they had sewn during this six-week period. Smaller things were laid on the table and then we started to take photographs.

For quilt lasagna we had ordered Moda Bali Batiks jelly rolls. The name under the picture is the name of the assortment in each roll. The last one is Mia's quilt sewn from fabrics that she has dyed herself. The stirps are a bi narrower and shorter than in the jelly rolls.

Meillä oli todella hauska kurssi, naurua riitti ompelun lomassa, mutta ihme kyllä toimittaja oli onnistunut vangitsemaan oppilaat lehtikuvaan kaikkein vakavimmillaan. No, ei se haittaa: toista kertoivat kesätoivotukset, jotka päättyivät useimmiten kommentteihin "Syksyllä nähdään taas!"

Yesterday a short article about our summer workshop was published in the local newspaper. We had such fun all the time but somehow the reported had managed to take a photograph with very serious student faces. But it doesn't matter: when leaving the students' summer wished mostky ended with the comment "See you again in the fall!"
