I haven't been blogging about all of the reasons that have caused me stress during the fall, one of them being this project with an old table cloth. I've been participating a class where we repair and maintain old domestic interior textiles like rugs, wall hangings and old linen. Originally I wanted to repair an old rug that my mother has made, but it turned out to be too complicated since it has suffered a water damage a couple of years ago and has mold in it. It would have required a wash with alcohol that is not taught in this class. So I had to find something else and decided to go for an old tablecloth that I had purchased from the Finnish eBay internet auction. You can see that the lace is torn on some places and the fabric is so worn that there are some holes in it. I've taken some pictures of them before and after repair.

Except for repairing the textiles we also have to document their "story" and all the steps we take in cleaning and repairing them. In that sense it would have been nice to have had some familiar textile to work with, since now I can only speculate about the table cloth and its history. Luckily, however, I came up with an idea to show it to two of myDH's aunts that are 86 and 79 years old and have always been eager crafters. From them I got some very useful information that helps me to define the approximate age of the tablecloth.

The class will end on January 15th when we'll be having a "show and tell" examination where we show our accoplishments. I'm really looking forward to that day, because the new books are at my bedside table and their techniques are so tempting. Especially today I've had to struggle to keep my hands of one of them that looks soooo tempting...
